Research

What new technologies are used to promote films to audiences?
  • The internet is a popular source for audiences to get information. It is a powerful, new marketing tool for film distributors as it is in the film industries interest to use new technological items in order to generate interest in stars and films. It also provides the potential for ordinary fans, audiences and web-surfers, enabling them to create their own kinds of interest. The film industry attempts to control the image of a star, the audience are able to give in. In all publicity there is a careful attention paid to how the star is to be represented to the audience.
  • New technologies which are common amongst youngsters, in today's society is Facebook and Twitter, these social networking sites allow people to know about the latest films. Also, having fan pages indicate the film companies determination to do well. They want to reach out to a wider audience, as social networking sites are targeted at a younger people.
  • Also, just owning cinema screen isn't an upright factor for film industries. It is important for them to own some sort of technological items, such as video games, shares in television companies, shares within the music industry and mobile phone apps. If the film does not make money in one place, having technological items will attract audiences having them wanting to buy the products, then encouraging them to buy the products. This is a way of synergy, as the film will have more than one merchandise.
  • There is a demand for 3D movies, television networks are exploring and releasing shows and even broadcasts such as the 2012 Olympics in 3D. Movie-talk conducted a study of consumer attitudes toward the growing trend. According to the research, roughly half of viewers enjoy the revolution and look forward to its progression. The other half feel the industry has potential but are not sold on the idea. As more movies are released in this medium, consumers are getting a better view of the success and possibilities of 3D animation.
Are there any changes on the horizon? What are the implications to the film and film promotion industry?
  • Twitter bombing is one of the main issue that may arise, this would lead to the film having a bad name and meaning less people go to watch it. Despite it being their favourite actor/actress or director producing it. The word of mouth that spreads from everyone's mouth, creates a realism factor for others which is the two step theory.
  • 3D movies are receiving heightened interest and increased viewings, the industry is also running into problems. Movie theatres around the country are unprepared for the new technology. Showing 3D movies requires upgrades in theatre equipment, such as new projectors. The trend is so new, so therefore if a 3D movie is not successfully filmed in the new medium, it may not produce the necessary revenue needed to fund expenses. Unsuccessful movies of this type make it difficult for viewers to enjoy the story. While technology is growing as these movies hit DVD and Blu-ray, the screens and glasses necessary to enjoy the experience from home are too expensive for most consumers.

Double page spread analysis

This double page spread has been taken from the music magazine ‘NME.’ The music genre, this is Indie. Lily Allen has her hands on her hips, which connotes her showing she has power. This could also suggest her showing she is in control and nobody can tell her what to do. Also, it could represent her as a stubborn character, or just being childish.
The masterhead catches viewers attention as it is a quote from the musician, and not a masthead that a publisher made up, therefore giving reader’s an idea of what Lily Allen’s article is about, and also showing she has put her opinion forward, 'People think I'm an attention seeker, but I'm just honest' shows her making a strong statement.
The typography is very childish however, it is bold, and stands out, it has a strong background of black and the writing is in white. The black background of the typography could connote her holding power, as black represents power. Whereas the white could connote her being pure. Moreover, the article format is very basic and simple, as all the writing is below, the masterhead takes up most the space as well as the image. The fonts and colours used are bold, in which represents Lily Allen’s personality as ‘what you see is, what you get.’ which could connote her giving out her opinions and thoughts. Moreover, all the colour used black, white and red complement each other and it all matches with her clothing.
The article writing is so small and has stuck to a colour scheme of black, with some parts being red, which stand out the most. Also, the representation of a famous person such as Lilly Allen, would ensure many audiences to buy the magazine, as the face is familiar. The article written around her is in simple, mutual colours, mainly black and white, whereas Lily Allen is dressed in red, which also links with her name being published in red, which could connote danger. The page number is featured at the bottom of the page along with the name of the magazine and the date which reinforces the advertisement of the company whilst displaying clear information to help search the magazine.
