4 poster analysis's

EDWARD SCISSOR-HANDS

This is poster from the film Edward Scissor-hands which was released in 1990.

Firstly, as Edward is the only person within the poster, this suggest he is the main actor, this makes him the protagonist as he has the main role.

This poster has a medium shot of Edward however we can't see his body this could connote his body isn't important as it focuses with a close up of the scissor-hands which allows the audience to see the hands, which could connote danger, as scissors can harm people and they are dangerous. Moreover the colours used within this poster are dull apart from the scissor hands, they have a shiny silver effect this could connote the importance of them and also imply they are what the story line of this film is about.

In addition the lighting used is high key lighting is used to make Edward look realistic, the high key lighting used could connote how realistic his hands are and it could indicate how dangerous he could be, as he has different hands and scissors are very dangerous as they can harm and cut you. The scissors being open could connote he is getting ready to grab something as if hands were open we are reaching out to get something.

The yellow butterfly on Edwards scissor hands stands out as it is in a different colour, the audiences eye would be caught by that, the butterfly could connote it has something to do with the film, it may have some importance, and the butterfly being on one of Edwards scissor hands could connote that something is going to happen with the butterfly and scissors.

Furthermore the typography used within this poster has this edgy effect, the 'S' looks like its been cut out with scissors which could indicate the story line of the film, as it is more slanted than the other letters, this could be done to show the importance of the letter 'S' as scissors begins with 'S' that's why it may have been done like this.

The target audience for this film would be kids especially teenagers, this is because the film has been manipulated and it gives the audience a mixture of the horror genre, romance, comedy and a fairytale, which are genres teenagers would be interested in or people who are fond of them certain genres

ROMEO AND JULIET

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy film, which was written by William Shakespeare, it is a film about two young lovers who are from different backgrounds and can't be together because of that as they have different classes. They are lovers whose deaths ultimately unites their feuding families.

Firstly within this poster, there are many things going on, this poster could connote the different things which happen within life, it is a contrast between romance and violence, moreover Romeo and Juliet are the main actors and we can tell this as they have the bigger image.

The shot used for Romeo and Juliet is a medium shot, this captures some of their clothing and lets the audience see their body language, and how seductively they are kissing. There is a medium shot of the families who are ready to fight against each other also, and some close up shots of the hand's and gun's the family members are holding, this could connote the importance of the class/background they are from. The lighting used is low-key lighting which shows a contrast between the light and dark areas. Also back-lighting is used which makes the whole poster stand out as it makes the object create a silhouette.

The colours purple and grey near the guns make it looks as if it is a stormy day and it could connote danger or trouble, theses colours are near the families who are ready with their props which are the guns to shoot each other. Moreover the orange/yellow could connote happiness. Its a bright light which could lead to heaven as it like a staircase upwards and it increases as it goes along, and as it starts near the couple it could connote happiness for them and god is with them as it goes up near the sky. In addition in the middle there is a heart which could connote Romeo and Juliet's love, also there is a light around it which connotes they're love is powerful and it is approved by god and nothing can stop that, as the stormy bits are faded out by the bright yellow light.

The typography used within this poster is very bold, the families names are in a dark reddish colour surrounded by the fire effect to connote violence. Whereas Romeo and Juliet typography is a white and bold which contrasts against the other colours, this could be to show the importance of them, as they are the main characters. The tagline is in black with a yellow outline, it is a very small font size, so it could connote it isn't that important, so that is why it is in a smaller font.

The target audience for this film would be teenagers and young adults as it is a romantic film, and it also includes the difficulties people go through in order to be together.

FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS

'Friends with benefits' is a film about two friends who have a sexual relationship without being emotionally involved. Then one of them falls for the other and the friendship blows away, and they find themselves worse off than they were before.

Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake are the main actors of this film and the protagonists and we can tell as they are the only ones on the poster, and it is mostly the main characters on the posters, so it will be clear to the audience that the story of this film is based around them. We are aware of who they are as their names are directly above them, so it is easier for the audience to identify who is who.

This poster is a medium shot of both the actors, it allows us to see there facial expression, clothing and their body language, Mila has one hand near her mouth and the other around her waist, whereas the boy has one hand on his head and the other one isn't shown, this could connote they are in love, as usually when a girl has her hand near her mouth she is shy and that usually happens when they are in love. Also Mila clothing is a tank top, which is slightly low, this could connote she wants some sexual attention, moreover Justins clothing is messy as his tie isn't up to the top and his top buttons are open, which makes him come across as he wants attention as well most probably from Mila.

The facial expression of Mila is happy, she is smiling which could suggest she has done something cheeky as it she has that smirk on her face, it could connote she has done something inappropriate. Justin has a normal facial expression, it is very relaxed which could connote confusion, he doesn't know what to do and as he has his hand on his head he could be thinking which makes it more believable. The lighting used is low-key lighting as little shadows have been formed, there is a white little light around the characters, which makes them stand out and this connotes importance.

They are next to each other, which connotes there is something going out. However there is a line in the middle which could connote separation between the two or an end of a relationship. Mila is making direct contact with the audience whereas Justin is looking at Mila, this could connote he is the one who wants her and falls for her within this film. This could be polysemic as it could have several meanings.

The typography of this poster is in the middle where the line is which splits up the two characters, the first letter of each word is in blue which could connote peace and calmness, this could be what they want within their relationship.

The target audience for this film would be young adults and teenage couples, as this is a film about love and relationships.

REMEMBER ME

Remember me is a romantic drama centred on two new lovers. The boy's parents split in the wake of his brothers suicide, and a little girl who lives each day to the fullest since she witnessed her mothers murder.

This poster has a image of Robert and his little girl, this connotes they are the main actors and the film is based around them, they are also the protagonists

The poster has a medium shot of Robert and the little girl, this shot foreshadows the film for us as we may see this shot again, this allows us to see their body language, clothing and facial expressions. The girl is facing her father but you can see a smile on her face, which connotes she is happy and is enjoying her time with him. Robert himself is smiling, but his eyes closed could connote he has some pain inside him and is upset about something. They both are so close to each other which connotes they have a close relationship. The clothing they are both wearing is black, they look sophisticated and well-mannered. Robert is wearing a suit and the little girl is wearing a smart jacket which could connote they are from a good background and they have money.

Back-lighting is used within this poster, to make the two protagonists stand out and also, the background is blurred which connotes they are the main people, nothing else matters apart from them. High-key lighting is also used to make the actors look more realistic and everything is focused.

The typography of the title 'Remember Me' is in red, which connotes blood or danger which is suggesting the theme of death or suffering and the title is smudged out which could connote someone has left them and doesn't want these two people on the poster to forget them, so therefore these two characters are standing in an urban area cherishing all the moments of that person who left them. Moreover on the left hand side there is a tree log and next to that some blood droplets which connotes the film has something to do with blood.

In addition the tagline is under the title which makes it stand out more, and it is in black bold capital letters, which could denote it has a meaning behind it which the audience would want to know.

The target audience for this film would be teenagers, as this film holds a strong moral behind it, which teenagers would want to know. The star within this film is well known and this would indicate more people coming to watch the film.

Key Differences

Edward Scissor-hands

An  young man, who happens to have scissors hands instead of normal hands, and he falls in love with a beautiful teenage girl.

The camera movements within the trailer is very effective, the camera moves slowly on its saxis from side to side to capture all the important events occuring within the trailer.

as there are many different shots being taken. There is a long shot taken at the start when the person is walking around, which allows us to see the characters body language, and their movement,  moreover this shot also includes an establishing shot as the background is there, the lighting within this background is very dull and dark which is low key lighting, which could connote danger or trouble. This could get the audience to feel intimidated as there are shadows created by the lighting.

Furthermore there is a Medium shot which allows us to see the from the ladys waist up-wards, this shot allows us to see her facial expression and her clothing, the clothing she is wearing is a light purple but it stands out against the background, which allows her to stand out, this could connote that she has more power, as she is brighter.

Moreover there are many close-ups within this trailer, which allows the audience to see there facial expressions, and how they react towards events. This could connote power or even show how helpless someone is.

A point of view shot is used and over the shoulder shot is used, we can see the back of the lady's hair and Edwards face, this helps establish the position of each person, and by this shot we get the feel of looking at one person from the other's point of view, this could help the audience imagine the situation from the persons perspective.

It's a wonderful life

'it's a wonderful life' is a film which released in 1946 and it is about an angel who helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would have been like if he never existed.

The camera movements within this trailer are very effective. The camera moves slowly in order to include as many different shots as possible, and also to make them as clear as possible.

crane shot is used when we can see above all the people, this is when the camera is above the ground. This was also a extreme long shot, which gives the camera a sense of mobility and it gives the audience a omniscience over the actors. Moreover this crane shot could connote rhythm as it is a party atmosphere, the crane shot gives the audience the power as it is filmed from above and we are able to see above everyone.

Moreover there is a medium shot when we see 'James Stewart' this allows the audience to see his facial expressions very clearly, the lighting used within this is high key lighting, to make James stand out from everyone else which could connote he has power. The camera moves smoothly after he is introduced and then their is a close-up of 'Donna Reed' which allows the audience to see her facial expressions, and it could suggest what mood she is in.

Furthermore there are many long shots, which allows the actors to show the surroundings they are within in a single frame. As the lady is walking whilst a long shot has been formed, a shadow is formed by low-key lighting and it could connote she is powerless, as she is walking away with her back towards the audience and she only has her shadow with her forever. low contrast is used within this film to allow the trailer to be more natural with the lighting.

Key differences between 'EDWARD SCISSOR-HANDS' and 'IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE'

The films 'Edward scissor-hands' and 'it's a wonderful life' have many things in common such as they both use a variety of different camera angels and movements. They both have some close-up's within the trailers. However they have many differences, as within 'it's a wonderful life' there is a use of a crane shot within the party and that isn't in 'Edward Scissor-hands' this could connote there were more people in 'it's a wonderful life' and it is more about parties, whereas 'Edward scissor-hands' is a more serious story, which could be emotional.

The quality of the two films are very different, the look of the trailers are different, as the colours of 'it's a wonderful life' are in black and white but still different lighting has been used such as high key lighting to make it more realistic and the film balances the dark and light sides, and the focus of the actors facial expressions. However 'Edward scissor-hands' is in colour and it is more of a realistic film, as everything is seen in colour, and this film uses a lot of low-key lighting, which could connote the guy needs help and is powerless.

Moreover there is a lot of typography within the film 'it's a wonderful life' this connotes they didn't have much equipment and weren't fully developed, whereas in 'Edward scissor-hands' there isn't no typography and is there is more sound, which is parallel to the scene, this could be as it was easier to introduce and understand which character is what, as by the 1990's the film industry was more developed.

Furthermore the target audience of the two films are different, they both are from a different genre and attract different audiences.
