Research

What new technologies are used to promote films to audiences?
  • The internet is a popular source for audiences to get information. It is a powerful, new marketing tool for film distributors as it is in the film industries interest to use new technological items in order to generate interest in stars and films. It also provides the potential for ordinary fans, audiences and web-surfers, enabling them to create their own kinds of interest. The film industry attempts to control the image of a star, the audience are able to give in. In all publicity there is a careful attention paid to how the star is to be represented to the audience.
  • New technologies which are common amongst youngsters, in today's society is Facebook and Twitter, these social networking sites allow people to know about the latest films. Also, having fan pages indicate the film companies determination to do well. They want to reach out to a wider audience, as social networking sites are targeted at a younger people.
  • Also, just owning cinema screen isn't an upright factor for film industries. It is important for them to own some sort of technological items, such as video games, shares in television companies, shares within the music industry and mobile phone apps. If the film does not make money in one place, having technological items will attract audiences having them wanting to buy the products, then encouraging them to buy the products. This is a way of synergy, as the film will have more than one merchandise.
  • There is a demand for 3D movies, television networks are exploring and releasing shows and even broadcasts such as the 2012 Olympics in 3D. Movie-talk conducted a study of consumer attitudes toward the growing trend. According to the research, roughly half of viewers enjoy the revolution and look forward to its progression. The other half feel the industry has potential but are not sold on the idea. As more movies are released in this medium, consumers are getting a better view of the success and possibilities of 3D animation.
Are there any changes on the horizon? What are the implications to the film and film promotion industry?
  • Twitter bombing is one of the main issue that may arise, this would lead to the film having a bad name and meaning less people go to watch it. Despite it being their favourite actor/actress or director producing it. The word of mouth that spreads from everyone's mouth, creates a realism factor for others which is the two step theory.
  • 3D movies are receiving heightened interest and increased viewings, the industry is also running into problems. Movie theatres around the country are unprepared for the new technology. Showing 3D movies requires upgrades in theatre equipment, such as new projectors. The trend is so new, so therefore if a 3D movie is not successfully filmed in the new medium, it may not produce the necessary revenue needed to fund expenses. Unsuccessful movies of this type make it difficult for viewers to enjoy the story. While technology is growing as these movies hit DVD and Blu-ray, the screens and glasses necessary to enjoy the experience from home are too expensive for most consumers.

Magazines

This is my third draft of my magazine front cover. The central image needs to be changed.

This is my second draft of my double page spread.

Targets and progress report

12/03/13 (TARGET)
- To complete all production work:
- Pick music for production work
- Pick a font for the production work title sequence
- Do an analysis of a double page spread
- To change the layout of my magazine double page spread - make 3 columns.
- Change the font of the quote
- Make the colour of questions a bit darker.
- Move image to the middle of the page into a circle.

18/03/13 - I've uploaded my second draft double page spread onto my blog, and also done an analysis of a double page spread. I've met all my targets which were set last week.

Double page spread analysis

This double page spread has been taken from the music magazine ‘NME.’ The music genre, this is Indie. Lily Allen has her hands on her hips, which connotes her showing she has power. This could also suggest her showing she is in control and nobody can tell her what to do. Also, it could represent her as a stubborn character, or just being childish.
The masterhead catches viewers attention as it is a quote from the musician, and not a masthead that a publisher made up, therefore giving reader’s an idea of what Lily Allen’s article is about, and also showing she has put her opinion forward, 'People think I'm an attention seeker, but I'm just honest' shows her making a strong statement.
The typography is very childish however, it is bold, and stands out, it has a strong background of black and the writing is in white. The black background of the typography could connote her holding power, as black represents power. Whereas the white could connote her being pure. Moreover, the article format is very basic and simple, as all the writing is below, the masterhead takes up most the space as well as the image. The fonts and colours used are bold, in which represents Lily Allen’s personality as ‘what you see is, what you get.’ which could connote her giving out her opinions and thoughts. Moreover, all the colour used black, white and red complement each other and it all matches with her clothing.
The article writing is so small and has stuck to a colour scheme of black, with some parts being red, which stand out the most. Also, the representation of a famous person such as Lilly Allen, would ensure many audiences to buy the magazine, as the face is familiar. The article written around her is in simple, mutual colours, mainly black and white, whereas Lily Allen is dressed in red, which also links with her name being published in red, which could connote danger. The page number is featured at the bottom of the page along with the name of the magazine and the date which reinforces the advertisement of the company whilst displaying clear information to help search the magazine.

Progress report

10/02/2013 - Yesterday on 09/02/13 we all met up and shot our final scene, which went well we took many shots so it is easier for us whilst editing. I have uploaded my print magazine which is incomplete and 10 images of which I would consider using on my print magazine cover as the central image.

DRAFT magazine.

This is a draft of my print magazine, it isn't completed as I didn't have enough time, I've added some effects which I have seen on other magazines such as 'Q' magazine, the effect with the name and making the forename bigger than the surname, this would attract the audience and would make them wanting to read it. Also the effect on the text "RASHMI SHARMA" is a drop shadow effect which gives it that spooky effect. Moreover, the effect on the image is very blurry this is due to it being a still image from one of our shots we had taken within our production work hence it being in that form, which means it had lost pixels from the image. As you can see I've stuck to a colour scheme of purple and black as they both stand out and are a good combination together. I've made the step text fit into the A this is because according to my research I've been able to identify that most magazine titles stick to two words, so A and Back would attract the audience, the step going down vertically would also engage them, and also as it is a different colour. I have the institution 'E4' at the top so the audience is able to see what channel it is from and so they would buy the magazine, especially if they enjoy watching that channel. The pricing and bar-code is placed in the bottom left hand corner. I need to add more text and make it stand out more when doing my actual print production, and I will as I'll have more time to do so.

Group progress

03/02/2013 - As a whole group, we have made a lot of progress, since we started, we all have contributed in many ways and here is evidence that we have been meeting up during our spare time to help with the production work. We were shooting from 11.00am - 4.00pm, it took a lot of hard work and patience, as we needed to make sure we were taking the shots a lot of times, so we can reach perfection and dust up all the little bits and bobs, to polish up our final piece for our production work, as we don't want to have to go back to Ealing Town Hall, so we had taken many shots, so it is easier for us whilst editing our production work.
Ashwaria, Me, Dupinder and Mandeep are in one of the Ealing Town Hall rooms, shooting our first scene for our production work. As you can see it is layout out in a way we wanted it to be, apart from the fact the chairs aren't the correct ones, we have got the correct layout. The decorations and displays fitted well within our first scene, as that is how we imagined it to be so. This also shows we have made progress as a group as we have began to shoot our scenes, also this is a record of reminding us when we shot our production work.

This is me on the stairs of Ealing town hall, whilst preparing for the production shoot, as you can see one of the props we said we would used have been used within this part of our production work. This part of the building was very nice, the big stairs made it look like it was some big place, such as a University, as it was very spacious.
This is when we went to shoot at Southall train station, which again we had to ask for permission, which we got. This is Mandeep shooting from the other side of the platform, the protagonist (Me) was on the other side.

This is another shot of Southall train station, this is proof that we shot here, and this was the sort of platform we were looking to do our scene on, due to there being two platforms, and making it easier for us to shoot and making it look as if the girl gets on the train. This made it easier for us.

Progress report

28/01/2013: My previous action plans were;
- Tell sir about our final idea
- Try getting the location fixed
- Start our shooting ASAP!
all these action plans were reached.

Progress report
We showed sir our pre-production elements and he agreed on the script for our production work, but thought our storyboards were lacking by a lot, so we need to make sure as a group we have a lot of different shots and be very specific about the amount of shots and we need to time it realistically. We should have this completed by Saturday. I've got permission from Ealing town hall, so we are able to shoot there on the 3/02/2013. We have to ask teenagers our age if they would watch such a show, and they said they would due to the storyline being very good and that being a good introduction to the series of the programme.

ACTION PLAN FOR THE WEEK
Complete the 50 shots (storyboard) by 03/02/2013 in time for shooting our first scene in the town hall
Complete shot list after storyboard. (Mandeep)
Print out all the essential forms needed such as the permission for the location.

03/02/2013:
Action plans completed as stated above, we completed the 50 shots of storyboard, shot list and also printed out the forms which are also filled out by the location supervisors.

Progress report
We have shot the first scene for our production work which took place today in the town hall and have started our second scene but it is incomplete, we took variety of shots from different angles so it will be easier for us whilst we put the whole production work together, so we can choose from a range. Also, so we can see the different angles and shots and decide which works better, we took each shot more than 4 times at least to make it easier whilst we edit, and we left a 3 second extra ending whilst filming so it would be easier when we cut out the parts to put together at the end.

ACTION PLAN FOR THE WEEK
Shoot our second scene for our production work
Print out more forms for the actors and the others and fill them out

Audience profile

This is my audience profile for ill manors Ben Drew, I made this on photoshop and used many tools to help me make this, i've included a few logos which would relate to the type of audience whom would watch ill manors, such as people who watch e4, bbc three, and have adidas item clothing, mostly people whom also smoke are likely to watch this, it is mainly males whom would watch this who are part of gangs, their age would range from 18-30 year olds, and they would belong in C1, C2, D, E and would be strugglers and explorers. I chose to keep the background in black as it represents them best as gang members are mostly wearing black, the black creates a suspenseful atmosphere, I put the gangs in the corner and plan B's picture high above as that is who they listen to and follow, thats their idol. Also I put the institution's at the top as they are inspired by them and they are the main channels they would watch.

Sunday 20 January 2013

Progress report

20/01/2013 - I've done all my tasks and uploaded the storyboard and script and also have received an email back from the town hall so our location is almost sorted. I've uploaded all the mise-en-scene work as well, which consists of characters, costume, lighting, location and props, I have added pictures near them to give an idea of what will be used within our production work.

ACTION PLAN
- Tell sir about our final idea
- Try getting the location fixed
- Start our shooting ASAP!

Rashmi: Yeah me too.. hey I really can't and now I have to go so I will catch you later (turning to go)

Ashwaria: okay then, whatevs

(Rashmi walks down the flight of stairs this is a long shot of her walking down, she is upset with her phone in her hand, texting someone. She get's out of the building and there consists of a fast shot of her walking past the shops, with her phone in her hand, we can see a close up of the suspicious someone texting her saying "Come and see me now or else". She's really worried)

*Sound Plays*

SCENE 2

(Rashmi enters the train station this is an establishing shot of her being on the other side of the platform, and there is a fast shot of the train going past and she's not standing their anymore but is in the train show the train going past and Rashmi not being there anymore, suggesting she is already on the train. She comes out of the train station and receives a phone call from the person whom she was texting)

(Close-up of phone, we don't see the boy, just hear his voice)
Boy: Where are you? I have been waiting for 20 minutes now and you said you were coming!

(Medium shot)

Rashmi: I'm here.. (worried) I'm just around the corner

Boy: Hurry up or else

Rashmi: I will be there please don't do anything

(Rashmi sees him the audience are not entitled to do so instead, can only see the body-language and costume, this is an over the shoulder shot of the boy, so we are able to see Rashmis facial expressions, then it slowly goes into a long shot, showing the back of the boy)

SCENE 3

(All the shots rewind and then an Extreme-close up of Rashmi's eye then zooming-out having a close up of her touching the locket she get's up then there's a mid-shot Rashmi's really worried)

Rashmi: Thank god it was only just a dream! I never want to meet him.. That guy... who did...... (cries)

(Clip ends with the cliff hanger)

Camera shots

Establishing shot - this is a shot which includes the setting/location, and it is shot from far away, it could also be called an extreme long shot.

Long shot This shot includes a full image of something, it would allow the audience to see someones full body language and movements. It could also be of a setting/location, which will allow the audience to gain more of an idea.

Mid shot This is a shot of thcharacters waist and upwards, this allows the audience to see characters facial expressions a bit clearly, as well as their interaction with other characters, also we can still see some of their movements and gestures with their hands.

Close-up This shot allows us to see the characters emotions and facial expressions really clearly, and it allows us to understand how they are feeling as it is a closer image, thus allowing us to feel empathy for the characters.

Extreme close-up This is a closer image of the characters face or anything else, which creates an intense mood and atmosphere for the audience.
These are the main shots, we will be using within our production work as they would help to create what we want to, we will be using long shots of the girl walking and then a close-up of her phone, a mid shot of the person whom she is seeing, and then a extreme close-up of the girl when she wakes up, also the establishing shot when the girl is walking past the shops.
