Opening of kidulthood

Analysis of the opening scene of 'Kidulthood'

The opening scene of Kidulthood  is very intense. The film starts of with a very close camera angle, of a teenage boy playing football, it slowly zooms out and slow motion could have been used to reinforce how bad the teenagers are now in this world, meaning taking drugs and drinking alcohol as they grow older, slowly, slowly. Taking drugs and drinking has a big impact on how teenagers behave in this society. The muttering and quite tone voices and conversations between all the students in the opening keeps the reader engaged and gets them thinking what they could have said as it's not well heard, so its something they would want to know. Three boys are shown wearing hoodies and tracksuit bottoms, which could make the audience feel intimidated due to the stereotypes going about black teenagers who wear hoodies are dangerous. However this could suggest they refuse to follow the teachings they learnt at school.

Moreover there was a group of girls, who were from different family backgrounds and brought up in different ways. One girl beats up another girl in a bad manner, there is noise made to create tension and worry. The shot formed was from above so we could clearly see what was happening, this could have made the audience feel sorry for the girl who's being beaten up.

Kidulthood reinforces ideology, values and beliefs of today by the society, the society see teenagers as trouble and in Kidulthood the teenagers cause problems, as they get involved in fights and get involved with other peoples business and use vowel language. Which isn't what all teenagers are like its a minority of teenagers, but the society believe its all teenagers. The society feels intimidated and scared by the way teenagers behave. Kidulthood is an example of why the society feel that way, the teenagers actions speak for their behaviour.

  1. WWW: You have used textual analysis to make observations about how the filmmakers have presented teenagers in a negative way.

EBI: I'd like to see you producing even more compelling arguments by using a clearer structure.

LR: Write 3 P.E.A.E.L (point, evidence, analyse, effect on audience, LINK back to the question) paragraphs using 3 pieces of textual evidence that supports your argument.

  2. When the camera is moving to a group of boys whom are in their own clothing, they look very scruffy and messy which gives them a bad boy look, one of them boys have their hood up which reinforce society’s stereotypical view on teenagers in today's society. The boy who had his hood up was really aggressive and we could tell this by his facial expressions being serious and his face being scrunched up with lines on his forehead and also his body language implies the way he was feeling as the way he is walking was rough, him also looking around with his eyes with anger inside them could suggest he is looking for someone whom has made him angry. Moreover their is an effective shot of an close up of a drill screw being placed onto the drill, the lighting is low-key as shadows are being created which creates engima codes for the audience as we wonder why is this happening, this could also connote danger as the drill part is very sharp so it could therefore harm and cause problems.
